artist statement

I’m fascinated by the horror genre-- however, I often find myself finding the monsters more interesting than the protagonists. I don’t know if it’s because I’m trans or queer or neurodivergent or what, but I’ve always found their “other”-ness sympathetic. I have used monsters as symbols in many of my pieces this year. For example, with my soft sculptures, I wanted to depict my own loneliness, and the pity and revulsion that comes with vulnerability. But in some of my other pieces, I just wanted to make some friendly little guys.

An ink drawing of a piece of driftwood drawn on the flattened brown backside of a Crayola crayon box. There is white tissue paper on the bottom right corner of the piece, evoking seafoam
A soft sculpture of a small humanoid creature with translucent pale skin cut open to reveal its insides, made of yarn resembling organs
A wall-mounted cardboard sculpture painted with acrylics. It depicts a child in a light blue button-up shirt and khaki shorts sitting cross-legged with its hands cupped together. In the place of a head, there is a dandelion flower, and three dandelion leaves extend behind the figure. There is a long brown root trailing down underneath the figure, and floating to the right is a single dandelion seed
A paper quilt roughly hand-stitched and taped together made up of various papers relating to schoolwork, tests, and college entrance exams A close-up of the paper quilt, featuring two sticky note to-do lists with white acrylic paint dripping down from their borders onto a magazine page. A close-up of the paper quilt, featuring a hilighter-ink-spattered handout of an example of a college entrance essay with hard-to-believe stories about the author's life
An upside-down portrait of a blue figure lying on a gray tiled floor. The figure's head is cracked open, and chunks of jelly-like substance spill out onto the ground. A ring of ants circles the figure's head like a halo
A rusted dog cage stood up on its end. On the bottom lays a four-legged creature with translucent, iridescent skin and visible organs made out of yarn and fabric A close-up of the creature inside the cage
A stuffed pastel green fabric heart in the style of a Conversation Heart candy. The red text, in all caps, reads: I have so much love inside me and no one to give it to
